Sports Collecting Nuggets for the Weekend

The Orange Park, FL police department acted pretty quickly in solving the case of the sports card store break-in. Less than 24 hours later, they had their man.

At the right you'll see some T206 cards on eBay. The 500+ card set is still one of the most popular of all-time. This little sucker celebrates its 100th birthday next year. You might never own a T206 Honus Wagner, but there are plenty of affordable cards you can own in this set, which is really more like a sports fan's antique art.

If you'd like a quick introduction to the first major 20th century baseball card set, head to this Squidoo lens.

Looking forward to attending the Premier Collectible Conference and Exhibition in Chicago next month. Some of the country's top collectors and dealers will be there to buy, sell and trade, but also take part in some roundtable discussions and seminars related to the sports card and memorabilia industry. There are plenty of issues to discuss in this multi-million dollar industry and we hope they're tackled head-on with a free and open exchange.

The hobby still has plenty of issues with fake autographs, doctored cards, and authenticators who make far too many mistakes when looking at supposedly game-worn jerseys and equipment. Too many people are not getting what is being advertised by dealers and auction houses. Rumors have been floating around that the FBI is again monitoring certain aspects of the industry, but we haven't seen or heard anything concrete as of now. If enough money is involved, you know they'll be interested.

Speaking of autographs...here's one site which has a nice selection of authentic signed sports memorabilia from baseball, football, basketball and hockey.
