Not that long ago, player jerseys, bats and game-used baseballs filtered out of Major League clubhouses on a regular basis, making their way into collectors' hands through a variety of ways; some legitimate, some not.
That doesn't happen much anymore. MLB sees what even the most pedestrian pieces of baseball memorabilia sell for in the marketplace and they don't like being associated with misrepresented merchandise, so they've taken the remarkable step of hiring authenticators to work every game, tagging broken bats, baseballs, lineup cards and other items with an official, trackable hologram.
